A cybercriminal going by the alias @IntelBroker claimed to have broken into Europol’s systems in May 2024, exposing a wealth of private information.
Leaked information included Personally Identifiable Information (PII) belonging to Europol employees, classified source codes marked For Official Use
Only the FOUO, various PDFs, and sensitive documents likely used for reconnaissance missions and operational planning.
The breach potentially impacted several Europol agencies critical to European law enforcement operations, including the Cybercrime Centre (CCSE), the European Cybercrime Centre’s (EC3) dedicated units for cryptocurrency crime and space crime investigations, Europol’s Platform for Experts, which facilitates knowledge sharing among specialists, the Law Enforcement Form, and the Selective Intelligence Retrieval System (SIRIUS), a vital tool for information analysis.
This incident poses a serious security risk because malicious actors could use the leaked data to target Europol employees with social engineering attacks or identity theft attempts, sabotage ongoing investigations by compromising sensitive intelligence, or gain an unfair advantage in cybercrime activities by learning about Europol’s tactics and procedures.
